Paynesville, Liberia – A violent clash erupted on the evening of Wednesday, February 26, 2025, between members of the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL) and officers of the Liberia National Police (LNP) at the SD Cooper Road Intersection, near the main ELWA Junction.
According to reports, the confrontation began when police officers attempted to enforce the ongoing motorcycle restriction, stopping an un-uniformed AFL officer who was riding a motorbike. The situation quickly escalated into a physical altercation when the officer resisted.
In response to what was perceived as an attack on their colleague, a large group of AFL soldiers stormed the police operation site, allegedly assaulting several officers. The attack left multiple police officers critically injured, sparking nationwide outrage and concerns over the growing tensions between Liberia’s security forces.
AFL High Command Condemns Attack, Calls for Calm
In response to the incident, Major General Davidson F. Forleh, Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of Liberia, issued a statement strongly condemning the unauthorized attack. He emphasized that the actions of the AFL personnel involved were not sanctioned by the High Command.
“It can be recalled that early Wednesday evening on 26 February 2025, some unidentified military personnel allegedly attacked a police officer at the SD Cooper Road Junction for reasons not yet established,” the statement read.
General Forleh assured the public that senior officers from both the AFL and LNP intervened swiftly to de-escalate the situation and restore calm. He further noted that the AFL’s Provost Marshall and Legal Affairs Unit have launched an immediate investigation to establish the facts surrounding the incident.
“The high command of the AFL calls for calm and assures the public that it is in active communication with national security authorities to ensure that this situation stays under control,” the statement added.
Despite the AFL’s reassurance, the incident has sparked widespread debate over law enforcement protocols and the relationship between Liberia’s security institutions. Many are calling for a thorough investigation to prevent further escalation and restore public trust in the country’s security apparatus.
The AFL reaffirmed its commitment to being a “Force for Good” and pledged to uphold discipline within its ranks.
