Sinoe, Liberia – The Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL) has arrested twenty-eight individuals accused of engaging in illegal mining activities inside Sapo National Park, authorities have confirmed. The suspects were apprehended at approximately 11:00 p.m. on Monday during a routine military patrol at Camp America within the park.

According to military officials, the operation forms part of ongoing efforts to protect Liberia’s largest remaining tropical rainforest from environmental degradation and unlawful exploitation.

First Sergeant Abraham Leaman disclosed that following their arrest, the suspects were turned over to the Forestry Development Authority (FDA) for administrative processing.

Meanwhile, the Chief Park Warden, John G. Smith, commended the collaboration between park authorities and the military. He described the presence of the Armed Forces as critical in curbing illegal mining and other unauthorized activities threatening the park’s ecosystem.

Authorities say the suspects are expected to be transferred to the Liberia National Police (LNP) for further investigation and possible prosecution. Government officials have assured the public that troops will remain deployed in the park to prevent a resurgence of illegal mining and to safeguard Liberia’s rich biodiversity.

Sapo National Park, located in Sinoe County, remains one of West Africa’s most significant protected areas and is home to diverse wildlife and plant species.
