Gbonota, Bong County – May 5, 2025: The Totota-Phebe Road, a vital transportation corridor connecting multiple districts in Bong County and neighboring areas, serves as a key trade and agricultural route in Liberia.

Despite its economic significance, the road has remained in a deplorable condition for decades. Commuters and residents have long decried its poor state, which has hindered access to essential social services and limited the region’s contribution to national development.

To address this long-standing issue, the Government of Liberia, through the Ministry of Public Works, is reportedly finalizing plans to begin reconstruction of the Totota-Phebe Road with asphalt pavement.

Over the weekend, Bong County Senator Prince K. Moye, a senior stalwart of the ruling Unity Party, disclosed that the road project is included in the 2025 National Budget. He announced that preparations for the project’s launch are expected to be concluded this May.

According to Senator Moye, the total cost of the road reconstruction is estimated at over US$3 million, with US$812,000 allocated for initial works in 2025. The full project is expected to be completed within three years.

“Our people have suffered for too long. This road is one of the major agricultural hubs in our country,” Senator Moye said. “The Government of Liberia has committed to paving this road over a three-year period, beginning this year.”

He also criticized the former ruling Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC), particularly former Vice President Jewel Howard-Taylor, for failing to rehabilitate the road despite being a native of the region.

“People came around with ‘white papers’ claiming the road was in the budget, but nothing was done. They lied to you. But this President, Joseph Nyuma Boakai, will fix it,” he stated.

In a related development, Senator Moye announced that the government has finalized plans to renovate and expand the Gbonota Public School in Walapolue Chiefdom into a full-fledged high school. The project is expected to begin soon.

He also pledged to complete the construction of the Gbonota Town Hall, build an office for the Joint Security Checkpoint in Gbonota, and support local women through microloan programs.

Senator Moye made these announcements during a thank-you visit to Walapolue Chiefdom on Saturday, in appreciation of the region’s strong support for President Joseph Boakai during the 2023 elections.

The visit also included the induction ceremony for newly appointed local chiefs and was attended by prominent government officials, citizens, and local authorities.
