Monrovia, Liberia – Information Minister Jerolinmek Matthew Piah has accused opposition figures of deliberately spreading falsehoods suggesting that Liberia is being used as a puppet to the west to cause instability in Burkina Faso—a claim he dismissed as baseless and dangerous.

Speaking at the Ministry of Information’s regular press briefing, Piah said the allegations are part of a broader “mischievous conspiracy” to damage Liberia’s international reputation and derail its quest for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council.

“These individuals are promoting misinformation to paint Liberia as anti-Pan Africanist,” Piah said. “It is foolhardy for anyone to label this country in such a way, especially when the facts clearly show our deep commitment to African unity.”

He pointed to the Foreign Ministry’s active diplomatic engagement with Burkina Faso, including multiple visits by Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti and a high-level security team.

Piah disclosed that these efforts led to a draft Memorandum of Understanding on security cooperation between the two countries, with a full working session held and the agreement near conclusion.

Piah also took aim at opposition leaders who he said are “hostile, desperate, and frustrated,” accusing them of working to sabotage national progress for political gain.

“We are dealing with a hostile, desperate, and frustrated opposition that refuses to play by the norms of democracy,” he said. “These are people who are not only praying for the government to fail, but are actively working to drag the country down with it.”

He emphasized Liberia’s historical role in championing African interests, warning that no amount of propaganda would succeed in distorting the country’s pro-African stance. “You cannot deceive the African people about where Liberia stands on African issues,” he concluded.
