ABUJA, NIGERIA — Liberia’s Head of Delegation to the ECOWAS Parliament, Senator Edwin Melvin Snowe Jr., has taken a strong and principled stance against the recent coup d’état in Guinea-Bissau, describing it as a clear threat to regional peace, democratic stability, and constitutional governance.

Speaking during a plenary session in Abuja—shortly after the Electoral Observation Committee he chaired presented its official report—Senator Snowe condemned the military takeover and reaffirmed Liberia’s unwavering position against unconstitutional changes of government within the ECOWAS region.

Senator Snowe emphasized that West Africa cannot afford repeated setbacks to democracy, noting that every coup undermines regional progress, weakens institutions, and destabilizes citizens’ confidence in governance. He urged ECOWAS to take firm, coordinated, and timely action to ensure that democracy is restored in Guinea-Bissau without delay.

His remarks were echoed by several members of the ECOWAS Parliament, who collectively denounced the coup and called for stronger regional mechanisms to deter military takeovers. A Ghanaian parliamentarian even pushed for the consideration of military intervention, arguing that ECOWAS must demand the release of election results and pressure the junta to return the country to democratic rule
