Monrovia, May 25, 2025 – Senator Edwin Melvin Snowe Jr. of Bomi County has strongly denied accusations made by the Liberian Government, describing them as false, politically motivated, and damaging to his reputation.

The government, through the Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism, alleged that the senator made remarks intended to undermine and destabilize the state. In a swift response, Senator Snowe issued a press statement from Sweden, where he is currently on official duty with the ECOWAS Parliament.

“I reject these baseless, malicious accusations in the strongest possible terms,” Snowe said. “At no time have I made any statement that could be interpreted as promoting instability or threatening the peace and democratic order of Liberia.”

The senator described the government’s statement as irresponsible and reckless, suggesting that it amounts to an implicit accusation of treason—one of the most serious offenses under Liberia’s Constitution.

“I do not take such an allegation lightly. It is a serious affront not only to me but to our democracy, the rule of law, and the constitutional rights of all Liberians,” he said.

Senator Snowe also accused the government of engaging in a smear campaign aimed at silencing critical voices in the opposition. “This action sets a dangerous precedent. It threatens the very fabric of our democracy and the right of every Liberian to speak truth to power,” he warned.

As a result of the accusations, Snowe announced that he has made the decision to withdraw from the ECOWAS assignment and return to Liberia. He has formally notified the Liberian Senate of his decision and called for a full, independent investigation into the matter.

“I am taking this matter seriously and will not allow my name and character to be dragged through the mud without accountability,” he said.

The senator is also calling on Liberia’s international partners—including ECOWAS, the African Union, the United Nations, and the European Union—to closely monitor the situation, which he believes is part of a growing pattern of political intimidation.

Despite the controversy, Senator Snowe reaffirmed his dedication to democratic principles and national unity.

“I remain committed to the values of good governance, accountability, and the inalienable right of every Liberian to express themselves freely and without fear,” he said.

The government is yet to respond to the senator’s latest statement.
