Finance and Development Planning Minister Augustine Kpehe Ngafuan has acknowledged that Liberia’s second MCC Compact was achieved through the efforts of the Weah administration.
“Thanks to the efforts of past officials of government and our own, we have won the Compact,” Minister Ngafuan remarked during his keynote address at the turning-over ceremony of two refurbished waste stations by the Monrovia City Corporation and its partners.
His statement comes amid debates over whether Liberia’s eligibility for the Compact should be credited to the Weah administration or the current Boakai-led government.
Some have argued that Liberia’s eligibility is based on its performance in 2024 under the Boakai administration.
Despite surpassing expectations by passing 14 of the 20 indicators, Liberia was not selected for the 2024 Compact in 2023 while Weah was President.
Minister Ngafuan emphasized the importance of celebrating the achievement, even amid challenges.
He highlighted improvements under the Boakai-Koung administration, including the dedication of waste stations, regularization of civil servant salaries, and the installation of streetlights.
He also urged Liberians to reduce negativity when discussing national issues.
“Let’s try to reduce the negatives as much as we can, but when communicating what’s happening, let’s consider the total picture,” he said.
