Monrovia, Liberia – December 19, 2024: A day after President Joseph Boakai announced Liberia’s eligibility for the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Compact, the U.S. Embassy near Monrovia and MCC have confirmed the information while clarifying that eligibility does not guarantee Liberia will receive a compact program.
In a joint statement, MCC and the U.S. Embassy expressed their willingness to collaborate with the Government of Liberia on launching the compact development process. “MCC and the U.S. Embassy look forward to working closely with the Government of Liberia to launch the compact development process,” the statement read.
The MCC Board of Directors selected Liberia as newly eligible for compact development, citing the country’s commitment to advancing economic reforms and democratic governance. However, the size and scope of the final program will depend on several factors, including analytical assessments conducted with Liberia’s government, the availability of funding, and the MCC Board’s final approval.
“Eligibility does not guarantee that Liberia will receive a compact program,” the statement emphasized. MCC also expects Liberia to continue upholding the principles of inclusive democratic governance that underpin its eligibility criteria.
Alice Albright, MCC’s Chief Executive Officer, welcomed Liberia’s selection for compact development, stating, “MCC is proud of our longstanding history with Liberia and is enthusiastic about embarking on a new partnership to advance opportunities for the people of Liberia.”
The MCC is a U.S. government agency established in 2004 to reduce global poverty through economic growth. It offers time-limited grants that combine infrastructure investments with policy reforms, exclusively to nations that meet rigorous standards for good governance, anti-corruption efforts, and respect for democratic rights.
Liberia first received a Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Compact in 2015. The compact was signed on October 2, 2015, and it became effective on January 20, 2016.
