Liberia stands at a critical juncture, with growing concerns over what many describe as a breakdown of democratic principles under the leadership of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai and the Unity Party. Multiple allegations of corruption, lawlessness, and tyranny have sparked widespread calls for accountability and action.
Erosion of Governance and Rule of Law
The Unity Party government has been criticized for its failure to uphold transparency and accountability. A glaring issue is the refusal of President Boakai and his officials to declare and publish their assets, raising serious concerns about unchecked corruption and abuse of power.
Observers have highlighted the alleged misuse of public funds by Public Works Minister Roland Lafayette Giddings, involving $22 million, reportedly in violation of Public Procurement and Concessions Commission (PPCC) guidelines. Similarly, the resignation of former Commerce Minister Amid Modad over allegations of financial mismanagement involving $96,000 has not been followed by any investigation or prosecution, further fueling accusations of impunity.
Political Suppression and Rights Violations
Reports of political suppression and targeted harassment of opposition figures have compounded the situation. Alleged unlawful dismissals of civil servants with ties to the opposition, the closure of the University of Liberia to suppress student activism, and the deployment of tear gas and live ammunition against opposition supporters have drawn widespread condemnation.
The alleged attack on former President George M. Weah, including an incident where his aircraft was reportedly forced to land under suspicious circumstances, underscores accusations of political intimidation.
Rising Hardship and Social Injustice
The escalating cost of living, with soaring prices of goods and services, has imposed immense hardship on ordinary Liberians. Reports of violent acts, including the killing of innocent children and unresolved cases of sexual violence involving high-ranking officials, further highlight the nation’s deepening security and justice crises.
International Community Urged to Intervene
Activists are calling on the international community, including the European Union, African Union, United Nations, and the United States, to take decisive action. They advocate for sanctions against the Liberian government and the suspension of international support until concrete steps are taken to restore the rule of law and protect the rights of citizens.
A Call to Action for Liberia’s Youth
Amid these challenges, youth leaders are urging young Liberians to take a stand. “We cannot afford to remain silent in the face of tyranny,” said Emmanuel M. Johnson, who is calling for nationwide protests to demand accountability and reforms.
“The future of our nation is in our hands,” Johnson emphasized, urging young people to rise above political affiliations and unite in the fight for justice, freedom, and democracy.
