Monrovia, Liberia – December 12, 202: The Unity Party (UP) has sharply rebuffed allegations from the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) that it masterminded the removal of former Speaker J. Fonati Koffa.

In a strongly worded statement, the UP labeled the claims as baseless, asserting that internal power struggles within the CDC itself led to Koffa’s downfall.

The statement outlined how Speaker Koffa’s growing influence and financial independence created tensions within the CDC’s upper ranks, including former President George Weah and other party stalwarts. Koffa’s ability to command loyalty through political consultations, employment opportunities, and significant financial resources reportedly unsettled key CDC figures.

The UP highlighted several incidents that fueled internal discord stating that when Koffa accompanied President Joseph Nyuma Boakai on a historic visit to the Vatican, CDC insiders reportedly questioned his allegiance.

The ruling Unity Party added that said revelations were allegedly weaponized to discredit him within party circles, painting him as a threat to Weah’s political dominance.

The UP emphasized that its commitment to good governance and constitutional adherence stands in stark contrast to the CDC’s internal power struggles.

Citing the illegal impeachment of Associate Justice Kabineh M. Ja’neh and other anti-democratic actions under Weah’s leadership, the UP accused the CDC of prioritizing internal rivalries over the nation’s interests.

“The CDC’s accusations are nothing more than a smokescreen to mask its own internal dysfunction,” the statement read. “Speaker Koffa’s removal reflects a party grappling with fragmentation and unable to uphold its supposed democratic values.”

The Unity Party also lauded President Boakai’s approach to addressing the leadership vacuum in the House of Representatives. Seeking legal guidance from the Minister of Justice, Boakai has since recognized Hon. Richard Nagbe Koon as the duly elected Speaker, a move the UP described as a demonstration of the rule of law and democratic principles.

The party congratulated Speaker Koon and called on all Liberians to support his vision for a unified and productive Legislature.

“As Liberia moves forward under President Boakai’s leadership, the Unity Party reaffirms its dedication to peace, progress, and prosperity for all Liberians, guided by an unyielding commitment to the rule of law,” the statement concluded
