Greenville, Sinoe County – The Sinoe County Health Team convened a crucial stakeholders’ meeting on November 13, 2024, to discuss the Mass Drug Administration (MDA) initiative aimed at combating two major public health threats: Onchocerciasis (River Blindness) and Lymphatic Filariasis (commonly known as Elephantiasis or Big Foot).

The meeting, held at the County Health Team headquarters, brought together representatives from local government, community leaders, health workers, non-governmental organizations, and international partners. It focused on the upcoming distribution of preventive drugs to eliminate these neglected tropical diseases, which continue to affect vulnerable communities in the county.

A Call to Action Against Neglected Diseases

Speaking at the event, Sinoe County Health Team Risk and Commication Director Osier G. Smith , highlighted the significance of the MDA program, emphasizing its role in breaking the transmission cycle of these diseases.
“Onchocerciasis and Lymphatic Filariasis have caused immeasurable suffering in our communities. Through this mass drug administration, we have an opportunity to protect our people from blindness, disfigurement, and social stigma,” Mr. Smith stated.

The Risk and Commication Director Osier G. Smith outlined plans for the program, which include sensitization campaigns, community mobilization, and the distribution of drugs such as Ivermectin and Albendazole, proven effective in preventing and treating these diseases.

Stakeholders Commit to Support the MDA

Stakeholders at the meeting pledged their full support for the initiative. Local chiefs and community leaders committed to mobilizing their people to ensure active participation, while health workers pledged to educate the public about the safety and benefits of the drugs.

Representatives from partner organizations applauded the County Health Team for its proactive approach and promised logistical and technical support to ensure the program’s success.

Public Awareness and Next Steps

The Health Team plans to roll out the MDA program in phases, beginning with high-prevalence communities. Public awareness campaigns, including radio talk shows and town hall meetings, are set to precede the drug distribution to address any misconceptions and encourage participation.

Meanwhile Smith urged all residents of Sinoe County to cooperate fully with health workers during the exercise.
“This is not just a health issue—it’s about preserving the dignity and livelihoods of our people. Together, we can eliminate these diseases from Sinoe County,” Mr. Smith concluded.
