More than 40 members of Liberia’s House of Representatives have expressed support for the speedy passage of the bills seeking to establish the War and Economic Crimes Court (WECC) and the National Anti-Corruption Court (NACC) following a two-day High-Level Technical Deliberation in Buchanan.

The event brought together lawmakers, legal experts, civil society actors, and development partners to discuss the legal and operational frameworks of the proposed courts. House Speaker Richard Nagbe Koon and Senate Pro Tempore Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence attended the discussions.

Participating lawmakers described the engagement as informative and said it helped clarify key issues surrounding the proposed institutions. We have had the opportunity to hear directly from experts and stakeholders, giving us a clearer understanding of the importance of these bills,” one lawmaker said.

The proposed WECC would address serious crimes committed during Liberia’s civil conflicts, while the NACC would serve as a specialized court to prosecute corruption-related offenses.

Stakeholders welcomed the lawmakers’ positive response, describing the Buchanan deliberations as an important step toward strengthening accountability, justice, and good governance in Liberia.

Participants expressed optimism that the momentum generated by the discussions will contribute to the timely consideration and passage of both bills.
