Monrovia, Liberia – February 8, 2025: Senior Elections Magistrates of the National Elections Commission (NEC) have strongly denied allegations that they are supporting the reinstatement of suspended NEC Chairperson, Madam Davidetta Browne Lansanah.

In a press statement issued on February 8, the magistrates described the claims as false, misleading, and unfounded. The allegations were first reported by the Daily Observer Newspaper on February 6, 2025, and later discussed on the Truth Breakfast Show on February 7, 2025. According to the publication and broadcast, 19 NEC Elections Magistrates had allegedly taken a position in favor of Madam Lansanah’s return to office.

However, in their statement, the magistrates categorically denied ever engaging in any discussions or actions to influence the Executive regarding the status of the suspended chairperson. They emphasized that, as election officials, their duty is to uphold the integrity of the electoral process, not to engage in political matters.

“These allegations are completely false. At no point have we, individually or collectively, engaged in any discussion or action to influence the Executive regarding the reinstatement of Madam Davidetta Browne Lansanah,” the statement read.

The magistrates further stated that associating them with political maneuvering was a direct attack on their integrity and the independence of the NEC.

Background: What Prompted the Statement?

The controversy surrounding the NEC chairperson began months ago when Madam Davidetta Browne Lansanah was suspended by President Joseph Boakai over allegations of misconduct related to the 2023 General Elections. While the details of her suspension remain a topic of national discussion, some political actors and stakeholders have called for her reinstatement, arguing that she was unfairly treated.

The recent publication by the Daily Observer Newspaper suggested that nearly 20 Elections Magistrates had thrown their support behind her reinstatement, raising concerns about the neutrality of NEC officials. This claim was further amplified on the Truth Breakfast Show, a widely listened-to morning program, sparking public debate.

Given the sensitivity of the issue, the magistrates felt the need to address the allegations head-on to avoid any damage to public confidence in the electoral process.

NEC Magistrates Demand Retraction of False Reports

As part of their response, the magistrates demanded an immediate retraction of the allegations by the media outlets that reported them. They warned that false information could mislead the public and create unnecessary tension, especially as Liberia prepares for the upcoming Senatorial By-Election in Nimba County.

They also urged journalists and media institutions to verify facts before publication to prevent misinformation. “The publication in question lacks substantive evidence to support its claims and appears to be a deliberate attempt to misinform the public,” the statement said.

Commitment to Free and Fair Elections

Despite the controversy, the magistrates reassured Liberians that they remain committed to their constitutional duties. They vowed to conduct elections in a transparent and credible manner, free from external influence.

“We will not be distracted by baseless allegations. Our focus remains on ensuring that the electoral process is conducted with fairness, professionalism, and respect for the rule of law,” they concluded.

As the debate over Madam Lansanah’s suspension continues, political analysts say the NEC’s ability to maintain neutrality will be critical in protecting public trust in the country’s democracy.
