Ganta City, Nimba county—-The Liberia National Police (LNP) has released its findings into the case of Josephine Mahn, a resident of the Deakehmie community, who was of allegedly beating her two-year-old sister to death in Ganta.
On January 31, 2025, Winifred Mahn, age two, was rushed to the Power House Clinic in the Gbatu Quarter community, where she was pronounced dead.
Eyewitnesses claimed that Josephine had been repeatedly abusing the child before her death. Concerned community members, including her landlord, had reportedly intervened, advising her against mistreating her sister. However, Josephine allegedly dismissed their concerns, insisting she had the right to discipline her sibling the way she feels it right .
While the accused attributed the child’s death to an illness, neighbors and residents argued that there were no prior reports of the child being sick. Witnesses also claimed the child was seen with physical bruises and a bloody chin before being taken to the clinic.
Following these allegations, a 15- member coroner jury—comprising medical practitioners, family members, and other stakeholders—was set up to determine the actual cause of death. However, the LNP’s investigation concluded that the child died of an illness, ruling out foul play.
Speaking to DN News county correspondent, the Assistant Commissioner of Police and General Police Commander of Nimba County, Larmie Mendin, stated that no evidence of wrongdoing was found. He emphasized that in cases of homicide or suspicious deaths, a coroner’s report is required before any final conclusions can be made.
Josephine Mahn, has been pleaded not guilty to the allegations, and was declared innocent and freed of any criminal charges.
Commander Mendin further disclosed that the child has since been buried following the police investigation. He reassured the public of the LNP’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and maintaining trust in the justice system.
