[Monrovia, Liberia] Former Montserrado County Sentorial Candidate, Chernor M. Jalloh, has expressed a grave concern over recent events that threatenLiberia’s democracy and the safety of its citizens. His remarks follow a violent reactions against peaceful protesters by state security which was held on December 17, organized by “The Concerned Citizens for the Respect of Constitution, Democracy, and the Rule of Law.”

He condemned the excessive use of force by state security, which resulted in injuries among protesters advocating for their constitutional rights to peaceful assembly and free expression.

Protesters gathered at Capitol Building to voice their dissatisfaction with the ongoing “Impasse” at The House of Representatives and of which they perceived as disrespect to the rule of law under President Joseph N. Boakai’s administration. Eyewitness accounts reported that police fired tear leading to chaos and injuries as protesters attempted to flee.

The Former Montserrado County Senatorial Candidate also termed the I ncident as a serious violation of the rights guaranteed by Liberia’s 1986 Constitution, calling for accountability from those responsible for the violence.

In his statement, he urged security agencies to exercise professionalism and restraint when engaging with civilians. He emphasized that violence is never a solution to the challenges facing Liberia and implored citizens to remain peaceful in their pursuit of justice.

“Let us continue to champion democracy through lawful and peaceful means as prescribed by our Constitution,” he stated, urging citizens to uphold their rights while maintaining order.” He stated.

Additionally, he expressed his condolences regarding the devastating fire incident that broke out on the building of The Liberian Legislature, Capitol Building which led to the burning down of the Joint Chambers and others offices.

He called on authorities of The Liberia National Police and other agencies for a thorough investigation into the cause of the fire, emphasizing the need for improved safety measures within governmental institutions.

His statements come amid increasing unrest and calls from various Civil Rights groups for government reforms and accountability.
