Thursday, December 12, 2024: The Female Journalists Association of Liberia (FeJAL), in collaboration with UN Women is conducting a two-day transformative capacity-building training for thirty (30) Journalists from across seven (7) counties on Gender-Sensitive Reporting on Women in Politics and Public Leadership in Buchanan City, Grand Bassa County.

According to a press release issued on Thursday, December 12, 2024, the training will take place on Friday and Saturday , December 13-14, 2024, respectively.

The release added that the workshop is designed to equip media practitioners from Nimba, Lofa, Bong, Grand Gedeh, Gbarpolu, Bomi and Grand Bassa Counties with the knowledge and tools to challenge stereotypes, amplify women’s voices. “It seeks to also promote inclusive narratives that enhance public appreciation for women’s leadership,” the statement said.

The release further indicated that the training will highlight the raising of awareness about women’s rights to participate in public and political life, emphasizing the importance of temporary special measures to ensure equal representation.

It noted that the initiative aims to address gender biases in media coverage through practical, hands-on training, enabling journalists to identify and eliminate stereotypes and discrimination in their reporting.

“The training will equip journalists with practical tools and strategies to effectively highlight and celebrate the achievements, contributions, and leadership of women, promoting positive and empowering narratives,” the release added.

The press statement stressed that the two days’ event will also encourage trained journalists to develop a story after the training highlighting women’s role in leadership and decision making.

At the same time, the Female Journalists Association of Liberia (FeJAL) urged participants to take advantage of the training, terming their participation as pivotal in reshaping public perceptions of women in leadership and fostering a media environment that supports equitable representation in politics and public life.

FeJAL, founded in 1998, is committed to amplifying the gender issues in Liberia through capacity building initiatives.
