A group of protesters, believed to be students and supporters of the University of Liberia (UL), staged a dramatic demonstration early Monday morning, blocking the main road in front of the University and near the Capitol Building.

The protestors used a burning tire placed in the middle of the road to disrupt traffic and draw public attention to their demand for government prioritization of the renovation of the University of Liberia instead of what they claim is an unnecessary focus on the renovation of the Capitol Building.

Chanting slogans and holding placards, the demonstrators criticized national leaders for diverting essential resources to refurbish government offices while neglecting the deteriorating conditions of the country’s premier public university.

“This is the people’s university! The classrooms are broken, the restrooms are horrible, and the library lacks materials,” one protester shouted. “Why renovate the Capitol when we can’t even sit in class comfortably?”

Traffic was brought to a standstill as commuters and passersby watched the fiery scene unfold. Law enforcement officers later arrived to calm tensions and restore order.

The demonstration highlights growing frustrations among Liberia’s youth and student population regarding educational infrastructure and government priorities.

Authorities have yet to issue an official statement regarding the protest.
