Monrovia, Liberia – June 5, 2025 – In a move aimed at alleviating the rising cost of living and safeguarding national food security, President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. has issued Executive Order No. 150, suspending import tariffs on rice.

The Executive Order, signed on Wednesday, extends and reinforces the provisions of the earlier Executive Order No. 125, eliminating tariffs on key rice imports in a bid to keep Liberia’s staple food affordable and accessible for all citizens.

According to the Executive Mansion, the order specifically targets rice imported under the following Harmonized System (HS) Codes:

  • 1006.30.10.00 – Semi-milled or wholly milled rice, whether or not polished or glazed, in packages over 5 kilograms or in bulk
  • 1006.40.00.00 – Broken rice

This tariff suspension takes immediate effect and forms part of President Boakai’s broader economic relief plan to mitigate the effects of inflation and global supply chain challenges on Liberian households.

“The government remains committed to practical steps that alleviate the financial stress on ordinary Liberians,” the statement read. President Boakai also reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to protect the purchasing power of citizens and maintain national food stability amid global economic uncertainties.

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the Liberia Revenue Authority, and other relevant agencies have been instructed to ensure full and timely enforcement of the Executive Order.

Rice remains Liberia’s most consumed staple, and any change in its availability or price significantly impacts the average Liberian. Analysts view the tariff suspension as a proactive intervention to prevent price hikes and potential market disruptions.
