Speaking at the event organized by the Rhode Island Liberian Community Association, President Boakai highlighted Senator Reed’s commitment to justice, compassion, and humanity, especially his role in advancing the rights and dignity of Liberian refugees in the United States.

“Senator Reed, our people have kept us informed about your tireless efforts on the frontlines during their immigration struggles over the decades. Your advocacy has resulted in the passage of the Liberian Refugee Immigration Fairness Act (H.R. 1169), which has had a transformative impact on thousands of Liberians and their families,” President Boakai remarked.

The Liberian leader recalled his nation’s painful history, from the destructive civil war in the 1990s to its eventual recovery, attributing much of Liberia’s success to the enduring support from international allies like Senator Reed. President Boakai described the Senator as a “champion of justice” who stood alongside Liberians during their darkest moments and worked tirelessly to ensure their rights were protected.

During the event, President Boakai also recognized Rhode Island’s broader contribution to Liberia, expressing gratitude to key figures such as Senator Sheldon Whitehouse and former Congressmen Patrick Kennedy, David Cicilline, and James Langevin, who have all played vital roles in supporting Liberians in the U.S.

He stressed that these partnerships have had far-reaching effects, benefiting both Liberian refugees abroad and their communities back home.

In a gesture of continued partnership, President Boakai invited Senator Reed and Rhode Island State Representative Grace Diaz to visit Liberia, affirming the deep historical ties between the two nations.

“We want to remain intentional about our friends and partners who have generously stood by us in our struggles,” Boakai said, emphasizing that Liberia’s future is built on unity, peace, and development.

He urged all Liberians, both in the diaspora and at home, to support these efforts by investing in local communities and fostering unity.
