Agriculture Minister Alexander Nutah has issued a stern warning to employees of the Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) and local farmers, emphasizing zero tolerance for corruption. He stated that anyone caught engaging in corrupt practices would face immediate dismissal or withdrawal of support.

Minister Nutah highlighted concerns over mismanagement within the MOA, including improper distribution of materials and financial resources meant to benefit local farmers. He vowed to take swift action against those found guilty of such misconduct.

Making a special statement at day one of the National Agriculture FARE 2024- Farmers Conference under the Theme: Promoting Agriculture For Food Security, Nutrition And Sustainable Development held in Kakata Thursday, December 5, 2024, Minister Nutah noted that the event is part of the Ministry’s ongoing efforts to enhance agriculture in Liberia.

He recalled that the first Farmers’ Conference was held in 1956, and the platform continues to provide a space for farmers to discuss challenging issues and find a way out.

The Liberian Agriculture Minister expressed his expectation that participants will draft a resolution with actionable recommendations for government intervention.

He commended their perseverance despite challenges such as limited income support, market constraints, and the impacts of climate change on the Liberian soil. Minister Nutah acknowledged the vital role of women, who make up 65% of Liberia’s agricultural workforce. Thus describing them as the backbone of the sector whose contributions are indispensable to the nation’s agricultural development.

“Farmers are the cornerstone of Liberia’s food security and economic resilience,” Minister Nutah said.

To further strengthen the Agriculture Sector, Minister Nutah called for modernization through the integration of technology and infrastructure. He pledged the Ministry’s unwavering support to local farmers and urged international partners to continue their collaboration and assistance.

As day one of the conference ended, Minister Nutah reiterated his commitment to rooting out corruption and ensuring that the Ministry fulfills its mandate to enhance the livelihoods of farmers across the country.
