Representatives from Public and Private sectors, along with development partners and community groups, have recommended the creation of a National Agroecology Strategy and a Climate Financing Framework to strengthen sustainable agriculture and climate resilience in Liberia.

The recommendations came at the close of the National Climate Justice Summit on Agroecology and Climate Justice, held at the Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf Ministerial Complex in Congo Town under the theme, “Climate Financing for Agroecology and Renewable Energy.”

In a final communiqué, stakeholders urged the Executive and Legislative branches to increase funding for agroecology and extension services, ensuring prompt budget approvals and full disbursements.

They highlighted this financial

commitment as essential to boosting food production, alleviating hunger and poverty, and supporting Liberia’s adherence to the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme, which seeks to build resilience against climate-related impacts.

The communiqué also called for a National Agricultural Development Fund to support agroecological initiatives, improved land access for women and youth, and a ban on hazardous chemical imports to foster sustainable agricultural practices.

Organized by ActionAid Liberia and its partners, the summit underscored the importance of agroecology and renewable energy as pillars of Liberia’s climate resilience and economic development strategy, as the nation prepares for COP29 in Azerbaijan.
