Justice Yamie Quiqui Gbeisay has been confirmed as the new Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Liberia following a unanimous vote by the Liberian Senate.

During Thursday’s session, all 24 senators present cast affirmative votes in favor of his nomination, with no abstentions or opposing votes.

The confirmation followed the reading of a report from the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Claims, and Petitions.

Justice Gbeisay, who previously served as an Associate Justice, now takes over leadership of the Judicial Branch of Government.

His appointment was strongly endorsed by the Senate Committee on Judiciary, chaired by Sinoe County Senator Augustine S. Chea.

The committee’s report stated that the nominee met all constitutional requirements and is duly qualified for the role of Chief Justice.

According to the report presented to the Senate Plenary, Justice Gbeisay meets the constitutional age requirement, has demonstrated high moral character, and possesses the legal expertise and leadership capability to effectively head the Supreme Court and oversee the country’s judiciary.

His confirmation comes in the wake of the retirement of former Chief Justice Sie-A-Nyene Gyapay Yuoh, who recently reached the constitutional retirement age of 70.

Justice Gbeisay’s unanimous confirmation marks a new chapter in the leadership of Liberia’s judicial system.
