Monrovia, April 23, 2025 — Former President George Manneh Weah has issued a stern warning that any attempt to ignore or undermine a Supreme Court ruling delivered today could plunge Liberia into a constitutional crisis, threatening the country’s fragile peace and democratic progress.
In a strongly worded statement following the Court’s decision, Weah said, “Any attempt to undermine, ignore or dismiss this ruling threatens the very foundation of our nation. It risks plunging Liberia into a constitutional crisis—a crisis that our fragile peace, hard-won stability, and democratic progress cannot withstand.”
The Supreme Court earlier today delivered a landmark opinion in the Bill of Information filed by Speaker J. Fonati Koffa and several lawmakers. The Court ruled that the actions of the so-called “majority bloc” in the House of Representatives were unconstitutional and illegal, and reaffirmed Koffa as the legitimate and constitutional Speaker of the House.
Weah called on President Joseph Boakai and his administration to respect the ruling and uphold constitutional order. “Ignoring or rejecting the authority of our judiciary undermines the sovereignty of our Constitution and endangers our collective peace with dire consequences,” he stated.
He further appealed to Liberia’s international partners to encourage the Boakai administration to comply with the ruling, emphasizing that their continued support has been vital to the nation’s democratic development.
Addressing the Liberian people directly, Weah urged unity in defending the principles of justice and legality. “We must stand united and firm in support and protection of our Constitution, regardless of political pressures or challenges,” he said.
The former president concluded by reaffirming Liberia’s commitment to peace, justice, and democracy, calling the moment a critical test of the nation’s constitutional maturity
