Monrovia: Information Minister Jerolinmek Piah has assured Liberians that the ongoing investigation into the seizure of drugs valued at approximately US$19 million will not end like the controversial US$100 million drug case that occurred in 2022 during the administration of former President George Weah. Minister Piah made the statement on Tuesday during the Ministry of Information’s regular press briefing in Monrovia.
According to Minister Piah, the CDC-led government failed to properly investigate the case, instead creating the impression that it was pursuing justice while indicting individuals they allegedly knew were not the real culprits and allowing the main actors to escape punishment.
The Minister stated that drug trafficking became more prevalent during the CDC administration.“Before the period between 2018 and 2023, Liberia was not known for drug trafficking. It was during this period that we saw the proliferation of drugs. Beyond the increase in drug-related activities, there were two major drug busts in the country. We witnessed the discovery of drugs valued at US$30 million and the bigger one, the discovery of drugs worth US$100 million,” Piah said.
Minister Piah called on Liberians to allow investigators the opportunity to conduct a thorough investigation to ensure that the right perpetrators are arrested and prosecuted. He emphasized that the ongoing case will not be a repeat of the handling of the US$100 million drug case during the CDC regime.
