NEW YORK, United States — President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has told world leaders that his administration is intensifying the fight against corruption, strengthening financial management and promoting greater public accountability in Liberia.
Addressing the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly on Thursday, September 24, 2026, President Boakai said his government is committed to “strengthening public accountability” and “ensuring prudent financial management,” while intensifying the fight against corruption.
He explained that the administration is also supporting the judiciary “to rebuild citizens’ confidence,” describing the effort as part of broader institutional reforms aimed at restoring public trust.
On the domestic front, President Boakai narrated that his government is driving transformation through the ARREST Agenda for Inclusive Development, covering Agriculture, Roads, Rule of Law, Education, Sanitation and Tourism.
He also stated that Liberia has made “concrete strides in revenue administration and infrastructure,” including the development of rural roads intended to connect farms to markets.
The President also used his address to call for changes to the international financial system, saying developing countries are being squeezed by “unsustainable debt, shrinking fiscal space and external shocks.”
He called for “concessional financing, debt sustainability, predictable development capital” and a fairer voice for developing nations within the World Bank and International Monetary Fund. President Boakai argued that the governance structure of major international financial institutions still reflects “1945 rather than today,” and urged reforms that would give developing countries a greater role in decisions affecting global finance.
He said Liberia’s domestic reform efforts and its call for changes to the global financial system are aimed at creating stronger institutions and supporting sustainable national development.
