Monrovia, Liberia – A farewell gathering for Diaspora Liberians at the Executive Mansion on Friday, January 3, 2025, took an unexpected turn when the air conditioning system malfunctioned, leaving attendees grappling with extreme heat.
The event, part of the government’s Annual Year of Return program, was intended to foster meaningful discussions between Liberians abroad and the country’s leadership but was marred by logistical challenges.
President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, accompanied by First Lady Kartumu Boakai, remained seated alongside over 200 Diaspora Liberians in the mansion’s parlor as temperatures climbed due to the faulty cooling system.
According to attendees, the uncomfortable conditions prompted many to resort to makeshift solutions such as using paper and hand fans.
In response to the escalating discomfort, event organizers brought in three fans—two large and one small—in an attempt to ease the situation. However, the measure fell short of providing adequate relief.
Some attendees decided to leave the hall and gather outside, where they found solace in the evening breeze.
Despite the disruption, President Boakai delivered a speech lauding the Diaspora community’s commitment to Liberia’s growth and prosperity. “Your dedication to our nation’s progress is invaluable. Together, we can continue to build a Liberia we are all proud of,” the President remarked.
The Year of Return program, which aims to strengthen ties between Liberians abroad and their homeland, has been praised for its potential to enhance national development. However, this recent event has sparked criticism over the planning and execution of such high-profile gatherings.
The lack of proper Air conditioner at the Executive mansion is concerning as it brings reminder to thousands of Liberians over the collapse of President Boakai during his inauguration early 2024.
It can be recalled that during his inauguration in January 2024 President Boakai failed to reach the end of his speech and had to be helped away from the podium during his swearing-in ceremony.
The 79 years Boakai, had been speaking for around 30 minutes at his inauguration ceremony when it became clear that he was having difficulty continuing.
President Boakai is now 80 years Old.
Some reports suggested that he suffered from heat exhaustion as the temperature reached more than 30C.
