Monrovia, Liberia — The Government of Liberia has issued a strong warning against statements it says could heighten tensions surrounding the ongoing Liberia–Guinea border situation, cautioning that legal action will be taken against individuals found undermining national peace and security.‎

Speaking at a regular press briefing at the Ministry of Information, Justice Minister and Attorney General N. Oswald Tweh described the situation as “highly sensitive” and called for calm, responsible, and patriotic communication from the public.‎ “This is a delicate matter that requires careful handling,” Tweh said. “We urge all citizens and residents to be mindful of their statements, especially on social media and in public discourse, as these can easily escalate tensions.”‎

According to the government, a surge of comments circulating online and in sections of the media has the potential to create fear, panic, and confusion among communities, particularly those living near the border. Officials warned that misinformation and inflammatory rhetoric could undermine ongoing efforts to maintain peace.‎“ Some of these statements are not only misleading but also capable of disturbing public order,” Tweh noted. “We must avoid actions that could threaten national stability or put lives at risk.”‎

The government emphasized that national security agencies are actively monitoring the situation and remain fully in control. It cautioned citizens against taking matters into their own hands or spreading unverified information that could worsen the situation.‎

While reaffirming its commitment to freedom of speech and democratic values, the government made it clear that such rights do not extend to actions or statements that endanger the country.

‎“Liberia is a democratic state, and we respect free expression,” Tweh added. “However, anyone whose statements or actions threaten the peace, security, and well-being of our people will face the full force of the law.”‎

Authorities are urging the public to remain calm, rely on official sources for information, and support government efforts to manage the situation responsibly.‎

The statement comes amid growing public interest in the Liberia–Guinea border issue, with officials stressing that maintaining peace and stability remains the government’s top priority.
