Gbondoi, Bong County – April 25, 2025 — In a historic move, the Government of Liberia (GoL), through the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA), has appointed Mary Ben as the new General Town Chief for Zone Four in Zeansue Clan, Yelequelleh District. She becomes the first woman in many years—and only the second ever—to serve in this role in Zeansue Clan’s Fourth Zone, Bong County.

The first woman to hold the position was Chief Lorpu Gbondo Rennie, who was appointed over a decade ago following the death of then-General Town Chief Nathaniel Sumo.

During her induction ceremony on April 23, 2025, Chief Mary Ben described her appointment as a significant milestone for women’s leadership in the region. Expressing gratitude, she celebrated the realization of her long-held vision to lead and acknowledged the contributions of her male predecessor, crediting his leadership for promoting good governance and driving community development.

Chief Mary Ben’s Leadership Agenda

Outlining her vision for Zone Four, Chief Mary Ben emphasized integrity, peace, unity, and reconciliation as the cornerstones of effective leadership. She pledged to prioritize community development and improve the overall living standards of residents within the clan.

Chief Ben vowed to lead with integrity and take a firm stance against corruption throughout her tenure. She stressed adherence to the rule of law and committed to operating strictly within the boundaries of her mandate.

“I will not take money from people just because I want to hear their cases. My leadership will work in the interest of the people,” she asserted.

Clarifying the scope of her responsibilities, Chief Ben stated that she would not preside over criminal or state-related cases. However, she plans to address matters such as disorderly conduct, debt disputes, and aggravated assault with the goal of maintaining peace and harmony in the region.

For decades, the name “Mary Ben” has resonated across Zeansue Clan, not just among women and girls but also men. As a passionate advocate, she has led numerous women’s groups and community initiatives, championing unity, peace, and visionary leadership.

Chief Mary Ben’s journey—from grassroots advocacy to her new chieftaincy role—stands as a beacon of hope for rural women across Liberia. Her story sends a powerful message about perseverance, service, and the growing role of women in traditional leadership.
