Former Liberian Lawmakers Form Special Mediatory Committee to Resolve House of Representatives Impasse

In the wake of ongoing upheaval on Capitol Hill, a group of former Liberian lawmakers has established a Special Mediatory Committee to address the political standoff within the House of Representatives.

It can be recalled on 17 October 2024, 47 Representatives signed a resolution to remove House Speaker. The situation has since sparked serious serious division among Lawmakers.

A release issued on Monday in Monrovia indicated that the group, aiming to maintain the peace and stability of the nation, convened to form this committee. The release noted that primary objective of this Special Mediatory Committee is to intervene in the ongoing constitutional and political crisis at the House of Representatives of the 55th Legislature, Republic of Liberia. The committee has been granted the authority to engage all parties involved in the dispute to seek an amicable resolution that aligns with the interests of the Liberian people.

The following individuals have been appointed as members of the Special Mediatory Committee:

Prof. Edwin T. Juah,Hon. Alomiza M. Ennos and Atty. Rufus D. Neufville.

The Committee is charged with the responsibility of diligently working with all factions involved in the deadlock to prevent an impending constitutional crisis and preserve Liberia’s young democracy. Additionally, the committee has been instructed to engage with the leadership of the Senate, as well as other local and international partners, to facilitate the resolution of the impasse at the House of Representatives.

According to the former lawmakers, the move is intended to safeguard the nation’s democratic principles and ensure stability in the legislative process.
