In a political upheaval, 47 out of 73 members of Liberia’s House of Representatives have signed a resolution to remove Speaker Fonati Koffa, marking a substantial challenge to his leadership. Notably, 80% of the lawmakers pushing for his ousting belong to Koffa’s own party, the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC).
Prominent figures among the dissenters include Representatives Bintu Massalay from Grand Cape District 1, Alex Gant from River Cess District 1, and Ivar Jones from Margibi District 2, among others. The group has accused Koffa of wrongful proceedings, poor leadership, and allegations of corruption.
Koffa has been in office for just 10 months, having been elected Speaker of the House in January 2024. The petition for his removal was presented outside the Capitol Building amid tensions between pro-Koffa and anti-Koffa factions.
Representative Frank Saah Focko of the CDC alleged that Deputy Speaker Thomas Fallah and Vice President Jeremiah Koung are financing and orchestrating the effort to unseat Koffa. This internal strife within the party raises questions about the stability of the current administration.
