The University of Liberia (UL) has suspended one of its staff members, Administrative Assistant Fobay E. Johnson, without pay and benefits, following allegations linking him to a recent armed robbery at Ecobank’s Sinkor Branch.
The action comes just days after the Liberia National Police (LNP) released findings from its investigation into the case, charging Johnson with multiple offenses, including armed robbery.
According to the police charge sheet, Johnson faces charges under Chapter 15, Subchapter C, Section 15.32 of the Penal Code for armed robbery, Chapter 10, Section 10.1 for criminal attempt to commit murder, and statutes governing the possession and sale of physical objects for lethal use.
The LNP report alleges that Johnson stormed into a private banking office armed with what appeared to be a shotgun, confronting a woman and attempting to duct tape her mouth—an incident reportedly captured on police video footage.
In a statement issued by Cllr. Norris L. Tweah, Vice President for University Relations, the UL Administration expressed deep concern over the allegations, describing them as a “gross violation and affront” to the university’s values.
“The University of Liberia strongly condemns any act of violence against the person,” the statement read. “Mr. Johnson is hereby suspended, with immediate effect, without pay and benefits, pending the outcome of the criminal proceedings. Depending on the court’s verdict, the University will take additional measures consistent with its Human Resource Manual and other policies.”
The administration further reminded faculty, staff, and students to avoid any unlawful acts that could cause harm or damage the university’s image.
“The UL remains committed to upholding its mission and vision,” Cllr. Tweah emphasized, “and will not tolerate conduct that undermines public trust in the institution.”
Johnson has been forwarded to court to face trial on the charges. If convicted, he could face severe penalties under Liberian law.
