Gbarnga, Bong County, April 24, 2025 — The Liberia National Red Cross Society (LNRCS) is taking significant steps to empower female volunteers across its structures nationwide.
Once seen primarily as general members, women are now rising into leadership roles within the Red Cross across all fifteen counties and regional chapters, signaling a transformative shift in the aid agency leadership dynamics.
According to Gregory T. Blamoh, Secretary General of the LNRCS, recent internal elections have resulted in women occupying more than 34% of leadership positions at county and regional levels.
“Women have, over the years, contributed immensely to the growth of the Red Cross and the achievement of its goals,” said Blamoh. “They are influential and powerful, and we are proud of their advancement into leadership.”
He continued, “This is a milestone achievement and a testament to our commitment to women’s empowerment and maintaining gender balance in all we do.”
The rise of women to leadership follows elections traditionally dominated by men. Despite that, the LNRCS is seeing a remarkable change — one that Blamoh hopes will continue. He expressed optimism about achieving gender parity in leadership, targeting a balanced 50-50 representation in the near future.
Decontee Yeahgar, one of the newly elected female leaders from the Grand Bassa Chapter, also expressed joy and pride in her new role.
“We are no longer spectators in the day-to-day operations and decision-making processes of the Red Cross,” she said. “We will now play an active role in shaping vital policies and strategies that will strengthen the institution.”
She added confidently, “We are happy for this milestone. We are influential, and we can perform the same roles as men.”
This is the first time the LNRCS has recorded such a significant increase in women’s participation in its leadership structure—an inspiring step toward inclusive and equitable governance within the agency.
