Monrovia, Liberia – May 13, 2025 — Following months of political uncertainty and internal wrangling within the legislature, Representative Richard Koon has been elected Speaker of the House of Representatives, securing a decisive victory over rival candidate Representative Musa Bility.

The election, held earlier today at the Capitol Building in Monrovia, saw Rep. Koon clinch the Speaker’s gavel with 43 votes, while Rep. Bility garnered 26. The outcome marks the end of a protracted and often tense period of political maneuvering that had left the lower house deeply divided.

Rep. Koon, who represents District #11 in Montserrado County, is widely viewed as a consensus-builder. His victory is seen as a move toward stabilizing the legislative body, which has been rocked by factional disputes and leadership contests since the start of the year.

In brief remarks following his election, Speaker Koon vowed to “unite the House and restore public confidence in the Legislature,” emphasizing transparency, accountability, and bipartisan cooperation.

Rep. Musa Bility, representing Nimba County, graciously accepted the results, pledging to work with the new Speaker “in the interest of national unity and legislative progress.”

Today’s election was closely watched by political analysts and civil society actors, many of whom expressed hope that the new leadership would help reset the tone of legislative governance in Liberia.

The House is expected to resume full legislative duties in the coming days, with Speaker Koon at the helm.
