Wednesday, July 30

The Government of Liberia has officially declared Wednesday, July 30, 2025, as a National Day of Prayer, to be observed as a public holiday throughout the country. The announcement was made on Monday during the Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs and Tourism (MICAT) regular press briefing in Monrovia.

Reading the official proclamation signed by President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Information Minister Jerolinmek Matthew Piah said the day is set aside for collective spiritual reflection, prayers for peace, and national healing.

“This is not a day for partying, drinking, or celebrating,” Minister Piah emphasized. “It is a day for sober reflection and submission to the Almighty God for guidance and protection. It is a day to unite in purpose, to ask God to bless our nation.”

The Minister called on Liberians of all faiths, whether in mosques, churches, towns, villages, or their homes to participate in the solemn observance, underscoring the importance of spiritual unity at a time when the country seeks lasting reconciliation and progress.

In response to public speculation surrounding the legality of the President’s action, Minister Piah clarified that President Boakai acted within the confines of the law.

“There are claims flying around that the President broke the law by declaring the day a holiday,” he noted. “Let it be known that the President has every legal right to declare a national holiday for a day of prayer or mourning. What requires legislative approval is making it an annual event, not a one-time proclamation.”

In addition to the formal declaration, Minister Piah read a special message from President Boakai, thanking the Liberian people for their spirited participation in the recently celebrated 178th Independence Anniversary.

“I was moved by the overwhelming display of unity and joy both at home and in the diaspora,” the President said. “From jubilant gatherings in Monrovia to passionate celebrations in the U.S., Canada, Australia, and Egypt, the message is clear: Liberians are ready to move forward in peace and dignity.”

The President described the National Day of Prayer as an opportunity for the country to reconnect with its moral and spiritual foundation, and recommit to a vision of inclusive governance and national renewal.

He reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to building a more united, peaceful, and prosperous Liberia. “This is the moment for all Liberians to rise above division, embrace reconciliation, and contribute to building a nation anchored in resilience and opportunity,” President Boakai urged.

As the nation prepares to observe this special day, the emphasis is not on leisure or festivity, but on humility, repentance, and collective hope. The call from the highest office in the land is clear: Liberia must look inward and upward to chart a more compassionate and unified course forward.

Wednesday’s observance marks a significant gesture from the Boakai administration, reinforcing its commitment to national healing, spiritual values, and the collective well-being of every Liberian.
