MONROVIA, LIBERIA — August 14, 2026: The Liberia Women Empowerment Project (LWEP), implemented by the Ministry Of Gender, Children And Social Protection-Liberia with funding support from the World Bank, is expanding its women’s economic empowerment interventions to Rivercess and Grand Gedeh Counties, with first-tranche grant disbursements now underway.
The expansion follows ongoing grant interventions in four (4) of the project counties including Bomi, Grand Cape Mount, Gbarpolu and Rural Montserrado Counties, bringing LWEP’s economic empowerment support to more women-led enterprises and communities across Liberia.
In Rivercess and Grand Gedeh, a combined US$718,100 is being disbursed to 258 women-led enterprises, targeting more than 6,000 individuals across 12 districts.In Rivercess County, LWEP is disbursing US$404,600 to 155 women-led enterprises, benefiting more than 4,000 individuals across Zarflahn, Norwein, Fen-River, Central Rivercess, Jo-River and Doedain Districts. The first-tranche disbursement runs from August 13–17, 2026.
In Grand Gedeh County, US$313,500 is being disbursed to 103 women-led enterprises, targeting more than 2,000 individuals across B’hai, Cavalla, Gbarzon/Gbao, Konobo, Putu and Tchien Districts. The enterprises comprise 29 VSLAs and 74 individual enterprises, with disbursement taking place from August 14–19, 2026.
These interventions are designed to advance LWEP’s core objectives of increasing women’s access to economic opportunities, strengthening women-led enterprises, improving livelihoods and supporting women’s participation in local economic development.
Beyond the financial grants, beneficiaries are receiving SIM cards to facilitate access to their funds and strengthen digital connectivity, supporting more efficient business transactions and access to economic opportunities.
The first-tranche disbursements in Rivercess and Grand Gedeh mark an important milestone in LWEP’s nationwide implementation, reinforcing the Project’s commitment to ensuring that women, particularly women entrepreneurs and members of women’s groups have the resources and opportunities needed to build sustainable businesses, strengthen household incomes and contribute to stronger local economies.
