Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – February 15, 2025:
Liberia’s diplomatic ambitions received a major boost at the 38th Ordinary Summit of the African Union (AU), as the continental body officially endorsed the nation’s candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2026-2027 term.
President Joseph Boakai, in his address to African leaders, expressed profound gratitude for the AU’s confidence in Liberia, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to championing Africa’s interests on the global stage.
President Boakai, speaking before fellow heads of state and government, mentioned Liberia’s historic role in African diplomacy and its unwavering commitment to peace, security, and sustainable development.
He emphasized that Liberia, one of Africa’s oldest republics, is well-positioned to advocate for issues that matter most to the continent, including conflict resolution, economic development, climate resilience, and youth and women’s empowerment.
“We are grateful and pleased for the Union’s endorsement of Liberia’s candidacy for one of Africa’s non-permanent seats on the UN Security Council for 2026-2027. We seek your continued kind support that will allow us to serve the continent and be a voice of change, particularly on issues of peace, security, women, youth, and development,” President Boakai stated.
The endorsement sets the stage for Liberia’s diplomatic push at the United Nations, where it aims to work alongside the Democratic Republic of Congo, also vying for a non-permanent seat, to address key challenges affecting Africa.
“Liberia’s leadership intends to champion initiatives that tackle the root causes of conflict on the continent, particularly the link between resource exploitation and instability.
It is imperative that we, as African nations, unite in our pursuit of justice and reparations for the atrocities committed against our ancestors,” President Boakai added.
This is not only a matter of historical justice but also a critical step toward the sustainable development and prosperity of our people,” he said.
Since the assuming office in January 2024, President Boakai has pursued an ambitious agenda of national and international engagement, leveraging Liberia’s rich history in pan-Africanism and conflict mediation to strengthen its global influence.
The country has actively contributed to peacekeeping missions and diplomatic mediation efforts, reflecting its dedication to fostering stability both within its borders and across the continent.
