Monrovia, October 21, 2024 — Embattled House Speaker J. Fonati Koffa has broken his silence regarding the recent attempts to remove him from office, emphasizing the need for dialogue with dissenting lawmakers.
At a press conference on Monday, Koffa said, “The ongoing attempts to have me removed require a serious conversation with my aggrieved colleagues. We must come together to address these issues constructively.”
His call for negotiation aligns with recommendations made by U.S. Ambassador to Liberia, Mark Toner, who stressed the importance of dialogue among lawmakers. Koffa noted, “Engaging all parties involved both supporters and opponents is crucial for finding an amicable solution to this situation.”
The political crisis intensified on October 15 when 47 lawmakers signed a resolution demanding Koffa’s ousting. However, by Sunday, that number had dropped to 38, indicating a shift in support.
Koffa acknowledged the concerns raised by his colleagues, stating, “I am committed to addressing the issues that have led to this unrest. Unity is essential, and we must focus on working for the people of Liberia.”
