Monrovia, Liberia – Alexander Cummings, the Political Leader of the Alternative National Congress (ANC), has raised concerns over the ongoing political and constitutional crisis engulfing Liberia’s House of Representatives, warning of its severe implications for the nation’s fragile democracy and socio-economic development.
Cummings expressed deep concerns over the potential fallout from the ongoing conflict, describing it as a direct threat to Liberia’s constitutional order and democratic stability. He warned that without adherence to the rule of law and constitutional guidelines, the nation risks undermining its democratic gains.
“The stalemate in the House of Representatives poses the most serious challenge to our Constitutional order and a threat to our nascent democracy,” Cummings stated.
He further stressed that political actions outside the framework of the law could lead to chaos and hinder national development. “Politics without guidance of the law will only invite chaos and undermine development.”
In a statement released to the public on Monday November 11, 2024, Cummings cautioned that the current crisis could have far-reaching economic consequences, potentially deterring foreign investment and weakening donor confidence in Liberia. He emphasized that stability, underpinned by respect for the Constitution and rule of law, is essential for economic growth and the protection of citizens’ rights.
“Without respect for the Constitution and rule of law, the nation cannot claim to have stability. This in turn will make it difficult to attract foreign direct investment, boost donors’ confidence, and reassure citizens and residents of protection under the Constitution and laws of Liberia,” he remarked.
In a direct appeal, Cummings called on the other branches of government, specifically the Executive and Judiciary, to step in and help resolve the crisis. He urged these branches to act in accordance with their responsibilities under the doctrine of “separate but coordinate” powers, underscoring their role in maintaining constitutional order.
“The crisis in the House of Representatives requires a deep reflection on the part of our other Branches of Government as they discharge their duties and responsibilities under the Constitutional doctrine of ‘separate but coordinate’. It behooves both Branches of the Executive and Judiciary to act to resolve and not complicate the current crisis. They owe it to the Liberian people and to posterity,” Cummings asserted.
The ANC Political leader at the same time urged all parties involved in the conflict to prioritize the country’s interest and seek resolution through constitutional means.
He advocated for honest dialogue and negotiation within the legal framework, highlighting the importance of projecting a positive image of Liberia as a responsible member of the international community capable of handling its internal governance challenges.
“The speedy resolution of the current stalemate in the first Branch of Government will not only demonstrate leadership at home but will project a positive image abroad that we are a responsible member of the comity of nations capable of resolving our governance challenges without external intervention,” he stated.
