The forum was part of CENTAL’s ongoing efforts to promote transparency, accountability, and community participation in governance.
The feedback forum provided a platform for citizens to revisit concerns and complaints they had previously raised during CENTAL engagements in the county regarding suspected corruption cases.
Participants openly discussed issues of alleged misuse of public resources, lack of transparency in governance, and weak service delivery structures. The forum aims to foster collective dialogue between citizens and duty bearers while ensuring that anti-corruption advocacy translates into concrete action at the grassroots level.
Facilitators from the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission and (LACC), the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and the County Council led sessions that focused on strengthening local governance structures and increasing citizens awareness of their functions and responsibilities. The Anti-Corruption Feedback Forum benefited over thirty (30) participants from various sectors, including people living with disabilities, the media, community leaders, civil society groups, women organizations, amongst other.
Speaking during the forum, Mr. Torwon F. Gensee, Project Coordinator of the Strengthening Political Governance and Accountability in Liberia Project at CENTAL, urged Margibi citizens to intensify their advocacy for accountable leadership. He emphasized that corruption undermines development and deprives citizens of quality services despite their tax contributions to government.
Mr. Gensee also encouraged the County Council and the County Service Center to improve their engagement with citizens, making their operations and mandates more visible and accessable to the public.
The Strengthening Political Governance and Accountability in Liberia project is funded by the Embassy of Ireland in Liberia through Irish Aid, and is implemented in three counties, Including Bong, Margibi, and Grand Bassa counties by a Consortium of three Civil Society Organizations.
At the close of the forum, participants applauded CENTAL for the opportunity to build their capacity and deepen their understanding of corruption-related issues. They pledged to take the knowledge acquired into their communities and contribute meaningfully to the fight against corruption, thus calling on CENTAL to maintain regular engagements with local stakeholders in the collective battle against corruption in Liberia.
