Finance Minister Augustine Kpehe Ngafuan has sidestepped direct questions regarding whether the Unity Party-led government will reverse the controversial salary harmonization policy.
During a major interview on ELBC, Ngafuan was repeatedly asked if the government plans to undo the harmonization introduced by the previous administration under CDC Finance Minister Samuel Tweah.
Rather than providing a clear answer, Ngafuan shifted focus to the financial burdens allegedly inherited from the Weah administration.
He claimed that the current government is grappling with repaying the Central Bank of Liberia approximately $15 million this 2025 as part payment, which the CDC government reportedly withdrew from reserves.
Ngafuan also mentioned an additional $18 million in unpaid ECOWAS taxes, funds that could have been used to reverse harmonization, had they been remitted by the Weah administration.
Throughout the Unity Party’s 2023 election campaign, reversing the harmonization policy was a prominent issue. However, despite the journalists’ persistent efforts, Ngafuan remained non-committal, leaving the future of the policy uncertain.
Harmonization, a salary restructuring initiative implemented during Tweah’s tenure, has been widely criticized for its impact on civil servants’ pay.
The policy continues to spark debate, with the public eagerly awaiting the new government’s stance on the issue
