Monrovia, Liberia – October 18, 2024 – The Alternative National Congress (ANC) has issued a strong condemnation of the recent disruptions at the Capitol Building, emphasizing the need to uphold democratic integrity amidst allegations of corruption related to the removal of Speaker Hon. Fonati Koffa.
In a press release dated October 17, 2024, the ANC expressed deep concern over reports suggesting a US$15,000 exchange aimed at influencing the Speaker’s removal.
“The very notion that such a process could be tainted by corruption is sickening to the core and speaks volumes about the challenges we face in eradicating corruption from our political landscape,” the release stated.
Capital Hill was a scene of chaos, when 47 out of 73 Representatives signed a petition to oust House Speaker Fonati Koffa on alleged wrongful proceedings and conflict-of-interest on Thursday in Monrovia.
While acknowledging that the House of Representatives has the right to elect its leaders, the ANC’s statement issued noted that the process must be conducted transparently and with respect for the rule of law.
The statement underscored the party’s commitment to investigating the alleged involvement of one of its members in the bribery scandal, noting, “his actions were without the approbation of the Alternative National Congress (ANC) and as such, will be subjected to our internal scrutiny.”
The ANC’s statement highlighted the broader implications of corruption, stating, “Corruption is a cancer that eats away at the fabric of our society, undermining trust, eroding public confidence, and stifling progress.” The party urged the public to hold officials accountable for the funds allocated to them from taxpayers.
The ANC called for an impartial financial audit of the National Legislature, declaring, “It is imperative that we, as a country, take a firm stand against such malfeasance.” The party also called on the U.S. government to assist in holding accountable those engaged in corrupt practices, advocating for swift sanctions.
The statement added that the ANC encouraged lawmakers to denounce corruption and reaffirm their dedication to serving the people of Liberia. “Together, we can forge a path forward that prioritizes transparency, accountability, and ethical governance,” the release concluded.
Lafayette E. Gould, National Chairman of the ANC, emphasized the importance of this moment for Liberia, stating, “The principles of democracy and justice are not just ideals, but realities for all Liberians.”
