Ganta, Nimba County – The Agriculture Department of the Liberia International Christian College (LICC) in Ganta has successfully concluded its 2025 Department Day, celebrated under the theme: “From Soil to Society; Cultivating a New Breed of Agricultural Actors.”
Speaking to reporters at the close of the day-long event, Mr. Essau Jacob Kollie, Head of LICC’s Agriculture Department, explained that the annual Agriculture Day is held during the first semester of each academic year. Its purpose, he said, is to showcase various aspects of agriculture, promote improved production methods, increase livelihood productivity, and highlight the importance of studying agriculture.
He further noted that the event also serves as a platform to engage high school students and expose them to the practical agricultural activities at LICC—home to one of Liberia’s most advanced agriculture departments—helping them identify potential career paths in the field.
According to Mr. Kollie, LICC’s Agriculture Department stands out among other higher learning institutions due to its strong emphasis on practical, hands-on learning. He said the college is equipped with modern facilities, tools, and instruments that allow students to experience agriculture beyond textbooks and pictures.
Kollie cited a recent visit by over 150 agriculture students from the University of Liberia as evidence of the department’s growing reputation and capacity. He emphasized that while other institutions rely heavily on theoretical instruction, LICC ensures students gain real-world skills through exposure to international-standard agricultural tools that result in tangible products and innovations.
“People often don’t believe in agriculture due to ignorance,” Kollie stated, describing agriculture as the backbone of every successful society. He stressed that hunger remains one of the greatest threats globally, and the key to overcoming it is through sustainable food production—something agriculture directly addresses.
He dismissed the perception that agriculture is only about working in the dirt, asserting that it is a profession capable of generating wealth and success. He proudly described LICC as one of the best institutions in the country, crediting its graduates for making significant impacts in the workforce.
According to Mr. Kollie, many organizations seek out LICC graduates for employment due to their competence and performance. He added that students are trained to understand the what, how, when, and where of agricultural practices, which gives them an edge in the job market.
He also revealed that several students from the department have benefited from international grant opportunities, thanks to the practical knowledge and skills acquired at LICC.
“We are proud of what we have achieved. LICC has the expertise and the capacity to deliver results in agriculture,” he concluded.
