The conference brings together regulators, telecom operators, and policy experts from across the region to deliberate on ways to enhance cross-border communication and digital integration among ECOWAS member states.
According to the LTA, the primary goal of the initiative is to create a more convenient and cost-effective roaming experience for citizens traveling within the region.
Once the framework is fully implemented, Liberians visiting neighboring countries such as Côte d’Ivoire and Guinea will be able to use their existing SIM cards to make calls, send messages, and access mobile data at local rates.
This means travelers will no longer be required to purchase new SIM cards in each country they visit, reducing communication costs and improving access to essential services while abroad.
Officials say this initiative represents a significant step toward regional digital integration, aligning with ECOWAS’ broader vision of seamless communication and technological cooperation across West Africa.
The LTA emphasized that beyond convenience and affordability, the roaming initiative will also enhance economic activity, boost intra-regional trade, and support social and business mobility for citizens and entrepreneurs alike.
As discussions continue, stakeholders are working toward a harmonized regulatory framework that will ensure the technical and financial feasibility of cross-network interoperability across the ECOWAS region.
The LTA reaffirmed Liberia’s commitment to driving regional connectivity through innovation, and praised the collaboration among participating countries as a sign of growing unity in the sub-region’s telecommunications development.
