MONROVIA, Liberia — Euphemia G.T. Swen-Monmia, appointed by President Joseph Nyuma Boakai as Deputy Governor for Economic Policy at the Central Bank of Liberia (CBL), has disclosed a monthly compensation package totaling US$29,000 during her confirmation hearing before the Liberian Senate.
The disclosure came when Montserrado County Senator Abraham Darius Dillon questioned Swen-Monmia about how long she had been acting in the position and her monthly earnings. “How long you been acting?” Senator Dillon asked. “I been acting since August 12,” Swen-Monmia responded.
Dillon then asked, “What is your monthly salary?” In response, Swen-Monmia outlined a compensation package comprising US$15,000 for housing allowance, US$5,000 in cash bonuses, and US$9,000 in monthly cash salary. The three amounts bring her reported monthly compensation package to US$29,000. At an exchange rate of L$170 to US$1, the total is equivalent to approximately L$4.93 million monthly.
The disclosure comes amid public discussions about compensation for senior government officials, income disparities, and the cost of living in Liberia.
The figures also raise questions about the justification for the allowances and bonuses, as well as the procedures used to approve the compensation package. However, DN News Liberia has not independently verified the disclosed figures and presents them as stated during the Senate hearing.
