Former President George Manneh Weah has officially declared that he will contest Liberia’s 2029 presidential election, marking his first formal announcement since leaving office.
Speaking at the ongoing Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) USA Chapter Convention in the United States, Weah told supporters: “I will be a candidate for the Presidency of Liberia in 2029.”
In his address, the former Liberian leader sharply criticized the administration of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, claiming that businesses are collapsing across the country while international drug cartels are increasingly taking hold of Liberia.
Weah argued that the closure of businesses has led to rising unemployment and deepening economic hardship for many Liberians. He also alleged that the growing presence of international drug trafficking networks is threatening the country’s security, stability, and international image.
Presenting himself as an alternative for the next election, Weah said he is seeking to return to power to address what he described as the country’s worsening challenges and restore hope for Liberians.
The former president also rejected what he called sustained propaganda against the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC), insisting that the party remains united and resilient despite political attacks.
”The CDC cannot be destroyed by propaganda,” Weah told cheering supporters, assuring them that the party remains strong and prepared for the 2029 elections.
His declaration officially sets the stage for what is expected to be a closely watched political contest, with Weah signaling his determination to reclaim Liberia’s highest office.
