A group of lawmakers in Liberia’s House of Representatives has taken a decisive step by endorsing a resolution to declare the Speaker’s position vacant.

This move follows Speaker Fonati Koffa’s alleged repeated refusal to appear before a committee setup to investigate him regarding allegations of Corruptions and Conflict of interest.

The resolution, backed by 50 lawmakers, was presented during a session in the Legislature’s joint chambers on Thursday, November 21, 2024.

Bong County District #7 Representative James Kolleh, who introduced the motion, urged the body to approve the resolution and enforce its recommendations.

He suggested that Speaker Koffa should be given a week to vacate his office and called for the withdrawal of all privileges linked to the role.

Citing Rule 9.1 of the House of Representatives and Article 49 of the 1986 Liberian Constitution, the lawmakers emphasized that their actions adhered to established procedures.

They noted that the Speaker had been invited three times to address accusations raised by six lawmakers but failed to appear on each occasion, prompting the resolution.

The committee’s report highlighted Speaker Koffa’s non-compliance, stating that his actions undermined the credibility of the legislative body.

In line with House Rule 10.1, Deputy Speaker Thomas Fallah has stepped in as Acting Speaker. Fallah clarified during the session that he does not intend to pursue the speakership on a permanent basis.

Meanwhile, the House of Representatives has elected Rep. Richard Koon as Speaker of the 55th Legislature.
