Montserrado County Senator Abraham Darius Dillon has vowed to introduce a bill that would extend the statute of limitations on prosecuting government officials from five years to 14 years.
Senator Dillon argues that the current five-year statute hinders efforts to fight corruption and bad governance in Liberia.
He believes that limiting the legal timeframe for prosecuting officials who carried out corruption during their tenure is counterproductive and too short.
The Senator noted that the brief duration does not allow new administrations enough time to pursue legal action against officials who commit corruption once their term has ended.
Dillon expressed concern that the law enables former officials guilty of corruption to evade accountability, leaving them free to enjoy impunity after five years.
“This law gives leverage to those who commit crimes after the five-year mark,” he said in a compelling statement to his colleagues during the Senate’s session on Tuesday, October 15, 2024
