Nimba County, Liberia – June 13, 2025
A group of women from Nimba County, under the banner “Concerned Women of Nimba County,” has publicly condemned Senator Nya Twayen for what they describe as a reckless and divisive campaign against ArcelorMittal Liberia’s Phase II Expansion Project.
In a strongly worded statement issued Friday, the women distanced themselves from the senator’s recent criticisms of the mining company, accusing him of endangering thousands of jobs and economic opportunities for the county. They described Senator Twayen’s remarks on social media and radio as “dangerous” and “misleading,” particularly at a time when the county is benefiting from ongoing investments by ArcelorMittal.
“Senator Twayen’s approach will not uplift us; it will isolate us,” the statement said. “It will not strengthen our country; it will stain its image.”
The women acknowledged ArcelorMittal’s shortcomings but stressed that grievances should be addressed through dialogue, not political grandstanding. They highlighted several benefits the county has received from the company, including the rehabilitation of the Ganta–Yekepa road, scholarships to Nimba University, the establishment of a technical training academy, and thousands of direct and indirect jobs.
They also praised Nimba County Superintendent Kou Gono for what they called “inspiring leadership” during the launch of the company’s expansion, contrasting it with Senator Twayen’s “self-serving theatrics.”
Quoting President Joseph Boakai’s recent remarks on the importance of constructive engagement with investors, the women called on all Nimba leaders to unite in negotiating better outcomes from the concession agreement rather than undermining it.
“Our position is clear,” the women stated. “We want more from ArcelorMittal, but we want it through peaceful negotiations, not provocation.”
The Concerned Women of Nimba County concluded their statement with a call for responsible leadership, unity, and continued engagement to ensure the county benefits fully from the resources it holds.
