Liberia’s Minister of Commerce, Amin Modad, has officially resigned following mounting controversy surrounding his purchase of a luxury SUV.
According to information gathered by DN News, Modad bid farewell to his staff on Wednesday, stepping down under increasing pressure over his acquisition of a luxury vehicle valued at more than US$90,000. Modad has faced intense criticism, with accusations of personal enrichment through the misuse of public funds.
The controversy began when it was disclosed that Modad had sanctioned the purchase of the luxury SUV for official use, funded by the Liberia Revenue Authority (LRA) through its Customs Capacity Building Fund. Intended for trade-related purposes, the purchase quickly became the subject of public debate after Senator Nathaniel F. McGill accused Modad of using his office to indulge in personal luxuries, including the SUV and possibly a yacht.
Further accusations surfaced when Modad’s connection to MedTech Scientific, a container tracking and inspection firm operating at the Freeport of Monrovia, came under scrutiny. The company, which has faced allegations of exploitative practices, was reportedly linked to the SUV purchase, fueling suspicions that it was part of a kickback arrangement. This prompted the Liberian Senate to call for a review, and possible termination, of MedTech’s contract after investigations revealed several compliance and financial discrepancies
