Strasbourg, France – The Republic of Liberia has once again underscored its dedication to advancing peace, democracy, human rights, and sustainable development on the world stage. Remarking at the 34th Executive Committee Meeting of the North-South Centre of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, France, His Excellency Ambassador Dr. Teeko Tozay Yorlay, Sr., delivered a statement on behalf of Minister of Foreign Affairs, Madam Sara Beysolow Nyanti, and the Liberian government.
Infurtherance, Ambassador Yorlay expressed Liberia deep gratitude for its accession to the North-South Centre, highlighting the nation eagerness to foster meaningful dialogue and cooperation between the Global North and South. “In his Voice “Liberia relishes its membership in global bodies committed to the promotion of peace, mutual cooperation, and respect for human rights,” he affirmed.
Meanwhile, reflecting on Liberia difficult past, the Ambassador recounted the devastating civil wars that once ravaged the country and praised the nation remarkable transformation into a stable democracy. He emphasized that peace and the rule of law have become foundational pillars of Liberia national development strategy, attracting investment and promoting reconciliation.
A highlight of the Ambassador’s address was the announcement of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. recent Executive Order 131, which establishes the Office for the Establishment of War and Economic Crimes Court.
This initiative marks a significant step toward justice and accountability for war-era atrocities and corruption. Ambassador Yorlay furthered called on the North-South Centre and its members to support Liberia efforts to investigate and prosecute these crimes, underscoring the importance of healing and justice for lasting peace.
Additionally, the Ambassador also aligned Liberia’priorities with the North-South Centre values, emphasizing youth empowerment, gender equality, social inclusion, and technological advancement.
He reassured Liberia commitment to the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and stressed the urgent need for global cooperation to combat poverty and climate change, particularly as vulnerable nations like Liberia face increasing environmental threats.
In his address, Ambassador Yorlay revealed Liberia candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council, urging support from both the Global North and South ahead of the June 3, 2025 vote. “Liberia’s win will not only be a win for the Global South but a win for the entire globe,” he declared.
Concluding his remarks, Ambassador Yorlay pledged Liberia unwavering support to the North-South Centre mission of fostering a more just, peaceful, and sustainable world. “Together, I am sure, we can work and make our world a very peaceful place that exudes positive energies through respect for the rule of law and human rights and promotion of sustainable development for all,” he said.
